About Me

I have many passions in life: playing bassoon, flute and piano; teaching music theory; knitting; reading; and cats! I’ve been playing bassoon for almost seven years and it has been refreshing to learn an instrument while already having a deep knowledge of theory, history, and pedagogy. It means that I’ve been able to really dig into the practice of bassoon playing and reed making. My personal goal as a bassoonist is to perform music that is written by historically suppressed composers. Through performance, I hope to address issues of inclusion and minority representation with themes that correlate to concepts of equality, wealth, resilience, identity, and opportunity. II have lived in Chickasha, OK with my husband since 2011. My last name is pronounced “suh-cool-luh.”

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is very simple: work with the student where they are that day. This philosophy works with students of all ages and backgrounds. When you walk into my studio my first goal is to find out how you are doing. Are you stressed? Happy? Tired? Once I know the mood of the day, I can set the tone for the lesson, whether it be serious audition prep or restorative music making. Once I know where a student is centered in the 30-to-60 minutes that I see them per week, I can adapt and create an educational plan that will enable everyone to progress in a comfortable manner.
